About

Jussi, Julian, and Rahaf meeting in a coffee shop

Our story began when the three of us met at the IEEE 7003-2024 working group. We were part of the same team, the Evaluation team. That experience opened the door to more questions about AI Bias:

What is bias, really? How many types of bias exist? What are the categories of bias evaluation mechanisms? How can practitioners manage bias once it’s identified?what is the relation between bias and unfairness? and how would all of these aspects be included in a comprehensive regulation?

These questions led us to start independent journeys. In every journey, we bring more clarity to AI Bias.

Our Goal
To move AI Bias management from concept to practice.

Our Team

Rahaf Albalkhi

Rahaf is the founder and CEO of The AI Bias Club, building solutions to manage AI bias. Previously, she consulted on responsible AI. She has designed policies, standards, a  course, reviewed products, led workshops, and sat on different panels and ethics boards. Rahaf has worked with early stage teams shaping their first products, as well as established organizations in highly regulated, risk sensitive environments. Rahaf holds an MASc degree in electrical engineering from the University of Victoria with her thesis focused on designing an acoustic modeling technique unbiased against people with speech disorders.

He is a member of the International Association of Privacy Professionals holding AIGP, CIPP/E, CIPT, and CIPM certifications. He is an active speaker on data compliance and governance. He obtained his Master’s Degree in Engineering from the Helsinki University of Technology.

Julian Padget

Julian Padget received a BSc in Computational Science from the University of Leeds (UK) in 1981 and a PhD in Mathematics from the University of Bath (UK) in 1984. He was a postdoctoral researcher for a year in Bath before being appointed a lecturer (assistant professor) in 1985, senior lecturer (associate professor) in 1994 and reader (associate professor) in 2017. He has published over 250 articles and supervised over 30 PhD students to completion. He researches primarily in artificial intelligence and its applications with interdisciplinary work in life sciences, power systems, systems engineering, social policy in relation to AI and contributes to standards-making at ISO, IEEE (technical editor of IEEE 7003-2024) and CEN (standards in support of the EU AI Act), mostly working on issues related to the management of bias in algorithmic decision-making.
